Project Isis

Welcome to the Project Isis Section

Project Isis was created to ensure that the BSC Systems operated and maintained by our main BSC Agents continue to be robust and efficient beyond the end of the current contracts. Our Operation contracts expire in 2009 and our Maintenance contacts expire in 2010. We’re procuring these two elements separately.

The BSC Systems are IT hardware and software systems that settle electricity imbalances each day. The processes that ensure balancing and settlement is performed are called Central Volume Allocation (CVA), Supplier Volume Allocation (SVA) and Funds Administration.

Objectives

Project Isis was set up to:

  • Plan and deliver fair, open, transparent procurements for the seven BSC Agents that deliver the CVA, SVA and Funds Administration services. Visit the Isis History page for a description of these BSC Agent Services.
  • Work in partnership with our current and future service providers to plan the exit management for the services.
  • Work in partnership with our current and future service providers to plan and manage a secure transition to the new services.
  • Deliver value for money and efficiencies to our customers.

What we’ve procured

Phase 1 - Business Process Outsourcing, Hosting and Communications of the BSC Agents delivering CVA, SVA and Funds Administration.

The IT hardware and software systems have been in place since 2001 and operated for each half hourly settlement period, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year since then. We’ve not replaced those systems: we’ve re-procured their hosting and operation. This phase is now complete – the contract was awarded to Logica in April 2008.

Implementation

We’re now well into the implementation phase. In the run up to the start of the contract in early 2009, Logica will replace the dated CVA Communications Network, deliver a technology refresh and the SVA services will be transitioned from the existing service provider to Logica. We provide regular updates on progress through our Newscast and special Isis Bulletin publications.

What’s Next?

Phase 2 - management and development of the IT hardware and software systems. We’re reviewing our strategy for managing the systems that underpin settlement and investigating various options. As part of these investigations, we issued a Request for Information about commercially available off the shelf systems to help us understand how they could be used in settlement. We’re also investigating options for taking forward the legacy systems.

Following our investigations, we’ll undertake procurement early next year reflecting our strategy for ongoing Application Management and Development services. Visit the Procurement Horizon pages for more information.
